Jakarta, indomaritim.com – Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said the government is preparing to establish 40,000 thematic fish farming villages to strengthen Indonesia’s protein self-sufficiency while boosting fisheries exports.
“We held a coordination meeting to oversee, secure, and ensure the success of two major programs. First, the Red and White Fishermen’s Village program. Second, the development of fish farming in 40,000 villages,” Hasan said here on Tuesday as quoted by Antara News Agency.
He made the remarks after a limited coordination meeting with Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
Hasan said the Indonesian government is shifting its food development focus from achieving carbohydrate self-sufficiency to strengthening protein self-sufficiency, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive.
According to Hasan, the government aims not only to meet domestic protein demand but also to position Indonesia as one of the world’s largest exporters of fisheries commodities, especially fish and shrimp.
To achieve this goal, the government has launched two flagship initiatives: the Red and White Fishermen’s Village program and thematic fish farming projects across 40,000 villages nationwide.
Developing fish farming in villages will strengthen national protein production while increasing the country’s capacity to meet growing export demand, he added.
Hasan pointed to strong demand from Saudi Arabia for pangasius, which Indonesia has been unable to fully meet due to limited domestic aquaculture production.
Moreover, the program will not focus on a single fish species but will instead develop various commodities based on regional potential and the needs of both domestic and international markets.
“There will be various types of fish. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will prepare the fish seeds. In a year’s time, people will be talking about fish every day. The program will start as soon as possible,” he said. (Dul)
