Jakarta, indomaritim.com – Indonesia should secure technology transfers alongside the planned handover of Italy’s ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier, to help its navy and domestic ship engineers learn to operate and maintain the vessel, a lawmaker said.
Utut Adianto, chairman of the House of Representatives’ (DPR RI’s) Commission I, said Indonesia needed to study carrier operations because the ship would become the country’s first aircraft carrier.
“Our sailors and engineers should learn directly so they become more skilled,” Utut said at parliament in Jakarta on Thursday as cited from Antara News Agency.
He said Commission I had processed the carrier’s handover last month, noting that parliament must approve major defense equipment acquisitions.
“The plan is for it to arrive on September 15, and the process has been completed,” said Utut, whose commission oversees defense and security affairs.
Separately, Defense Ministry Spokesman Brig. Gen. Rico Ricardo Sirait said the carrier would help strengthen Indonesia’s domestic defense industry.
“This is expected to create opportunities to improve the capabilities and involvement of the national maritime defense industry,” Rico said.
Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Muhammad Ali previously said the carrier was expected to arrive in Indonesia between September 15 and 20.
During its voyage to Indonesia, the ship will retain the name ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi and sail under the Italian flag.
Upon arrival, the intergovernmental-donation vessel will fly Indonesia’s red-and-white flag and be renamed KRI Gajah Mada. (Edo)
