Kota Bandung, indomaritim.com – Indonesia’s military (TNI), is conducting the 2026 Super Garuda Shield (SGS) joint exercise involving 4,743 personnel from 21 countries to test troops’ operational readiness, strengthen defense diplomacy and enhance their ability to respond to various security challenges.
TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto said Super Garuda Shield is an annual exercise held at various locations across Indonesia from Aug. 31 to Sept. 11, 2026.
“Super Garuda Shield is held every year in Indonesia. This year, 21 countries are participating, with a total of 4,743 personnel taking part in 12 exercise activities,” Agus said in Bandung on Monday as cited from Antara News Agency.
The 21 participating countries are Indonesia, the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, India, Britain, Italy, Japan, Germany, Cambodia, Canada, South Korea, Laos, New Zealand, France, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
Agus said the exercise is being held in Bandung, Jakarta, Lampung, the Indonesian Army’s Baturaja Combat Training Center in South Sumatra, and Nunukan in North Kalimantan. The exercise will conclude in Jakarta on Sept. 11, 2026.
“The purpose of the exercise is, first, diplomacy, and then cooperation through the exchange of capabilities,” he said.
One of the capabilities being developed during SGS 2026 is cybersecurity, Agus said.
He added that cybersecurity was particularly important for the TNI because its cyber unit was established only about three years ago. Joint exercises provide an opportunity for the TNI to exchange expertise and capabilities with partner countries.
“For example, within the TNI, we have only had a cyber unit for three years. Here, we are conducting cyber command-post exercises with other countries, along with other exercises,” he said.
Agus also said SGS 2026 is strengthening its humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) component, which is also being conducted in North Kalimantan.
“So there is an HADR component dealing with natural disasters. This year, we have added a natural disaster exercise in North Kalimantan,” Agus said. (Dul)
