Tangerang, indomaritim.com – The Indonesian government said on Monday, that an estimated 341,000 passengers have been impacted by widespread flight disruptions caused by the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau over the past three days.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono noted that the spreading volcanic ash has affected a total of 2,961 flights nationwide, encompassing 2,339 domestic routes and 622 international services.
“The government continues to routinely monitor Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity through cross-agency coordination to ensure aviation safety and provide optimal services for affected passengers,” Yudhoyono said after inspecting the emergency command post at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
He added that the massive ash cloud has forced the temporary closure of several primary and supporting aviation hubs.
According to Antara News Agency, the groundings affect Jakarta’s main gateways, Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma, as well as multiple regional airports.
Those regional airports are Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, Taufiq Kiemas Airport in West Lampung, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, Budiarto Airport in Curug, and Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang.
To mitigate severe congestion from stranded travelers and maintain vital national connectivity, the government has ordered five alternative airports to operate 24 hours a day starting Monday.
They include Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka, West Java; Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, Central Java; Adi Soemarmo Airport in Surakarta, Central Java; Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta; and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java.
