Jakarta, Indomaritim.com – Culture Minister Fadli Zon held diplomatic meetings in France to seek international backing for Indonesia’s bid to join UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage committee for 2026–2030.
Accompanied by Ambassador Mohamad Oemar, he met ambassadors and delegates from Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states at UNESCO headquarters.
“This meeting is an opportunity to campaign for and secure support for Indonesia’s candidacy,” the minister said in a statement on Sunday.
Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to taking a larger role in safeguarding global intangible cultural heritage.
“We are ready to actively contribute, including by strengthening community-based protection and expanding cooperation among OIC countries,” Fadli said.
He added Indonesia’s new standalone Culture Ministry opens broader opportunities to deepen bilateral cultural cooperation with OIC members.
Beyond the candidacy, discussions also covered efforts to raise the global profile of Islamic art and culture through UNESCO, including joint nominations and integrated preservation programs.
Fadli stressed the importance of stronger coordination among Muslim-majority countries.
He expressed hope such solidarity would help position culture as a driver of global peace.
“I hope this meeting strengthens cooperation and reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to using culture as a bridge for diplomacy and peace,” he said.
Representatives from Palestine, Iran, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Brunei also attended. (Ant)
