Indonesian Navy Prepares 310 Personnel for First Aircraft Carrier

Jakarta, indomaritim.com – The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is training 310 personnel to crew KRI Sriwijaya, the country’s first aircraft carrier, which previously served in the Italian Navy as ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The TNI AL Fleet Command (Koarmada) said in a statement on Thursday that Indonesia had prepared a series of exercises for prospective crew members of the Italian-made aircraft carrier.

“Lessons are being taught with a focus on the knowledge, skills and professionalism that every soldier must have before serving aboard KRI Sriwijaya,” said Colonel Wishnu Ardiansyah, head of Koarmada’s Information Service.

According to Antara News Agency, Colonel Wishnu said the TNI AL had assigned officers with relevant expertise and backgrounds to provide training for the 310 personnel.

For example, Ardiansyah said Koarmada Commander Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata briefed participants at the command’s education facility in North Jakarta on Wednesday, September 16.

However, he did not specify what lessons were being taught or when the training program began.

“We are preparing prospective crew members through well-directed and disciplined training focused on operational readiness,” the officer said.

He also confirmed that the aircraft carrier would operate as KRI Sriwijaya, named after an ancient Malayic empire based in Sumatra, replacing the previously suggested name KRI Gajah Mada.

The navy hopes the training will produce personnel qualified to operate the aircraft carrier, which is due to arrive in Jakarta for an inauguration ceremony after sailing from Italy.

Head of the TNI AL Information Service First Admiral Tunggul said the ship had entered Indonesian waters and would dock at Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Friday.

The carrier was escorted by two Italian vessels through international waters before being guided through Indonesian waters by two TNI AL frigates, he added. (Hes)
