Jakarta, indomaritim.com – From April 22 to 24 2025, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM), in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Badan Geologi, hosted a seminar in Jakarta on sustainable and post-mining best practices. The event aimed to foster dialogue between Indonesian and French public stakeholders to promote more responsible mining practices.
This technical seminar is part of the Indonesia Energy Transition Facility (IETF) , a €14.7 M grant programme of technical assistances co-financed by AFD and the European Union, and implemented by AFD. It is the first activity to support the Indonesian government in
improving environmental and social governance of its extractive industries. Indonesia holds some of the world’s largest reserves of nickel and cobalt — minerals essential for the global energy transition. As demand for these critical resources continues to rise, improving sustainability and reducing the environmental and social impacts of mining is crucial. By building institutional capacity, the programme contributes to a more just, inclusive, and low-carbon future.
“The aim of the seminar is to provide an overview of best practices in mining management, environmental remediation, and mining waste valorization, while introducing advanced data management. Today’s seminar is a reflection of our collective commitment and the potential for achieving success through collaboration”, said Bapak Julian Ambassadur, Director of Mineral and Coal Programme Development of the Indonesia Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
“Through this seminar, we are strengthening the capacity of Indonesian institutions and creating opportunities for dialogue and mutual learning. AFD is willing to support Indonesia in managing its mineral resources more sustainably,” added Nurrahman Waluyo, project officer for Energy sector at AFD office in Jakarta.
The seminar brought together around 20 participants from MEMR, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, the Indonesian Mining Association, and regional governments. It covered environmental and social risk management throughout the mine lifecycle, mine closure, governance mechanisms, and waste valorization. French experts from BRGM presented French practices and lessons learned, contributing to a stronger cooperation between the two countries in the energy transition sector.
“Indonesia’s approach to reducing the environmental impacts of mining relies on an integrated risk reduction methodology applied across the entire value chain”, concluded Olivier Frézot, Area Manager for Asia in BRGM.
