Jakarta, indomaritim.com – President Prabowo Subianto reiterated his commitment to ensuring that national fishery resources are fully utilized by Indonesian fishermen rather than foreign vessels.

“We do not want foreign vessels to fish in our seas; we want our people to fish,” the president said while visiting a fishing village in South Leato, Gorontalo, on Saturday.

Aiming to strengthen the national maritime economy, the government will begin building 1,582 fishing vessels this year to assist local fishermen.

According to Antara news agency, these vessels will later be distributed to fishing groups through a cooperative system according to the explanation provided by the president.

Such a program is needed to prevent the marine resources of Indonesia from being exploited by foreign parties.

Furthermore the government will undertake large scale development of the fisheries and maritime sector through the concept of a blue ocean economy.

Prabowo emphasized that the marine potential of Indonesia is a great gift that must be optimally managed for the welfare of the people.

In addition to shipbuilding the government is also targeting the massive development of fishing villages nationwide.

This year the government plans to inaugurate 1,386 Red and White fishing villages across Indonesia to improve local infrastructure.

President Prabowo stated that the nation has approximately 12,000 fishing villages which makes this program a major undertaking that requires courage and consistent policy.

The main goal of this initiative is to improve the welfare of national fishermen and ensure they have the resources needed to succeed.

“We are on the right track. Our people must prosper. I want our fishermen to prosper. I want them to smile every day because they earn a good living,” Prabowo remarked. (RR)
