Jakarta, indomaritim.com – Construction of the Abadi Masela gas field project in Maluku is officially scheduled to begin in 2027, according to Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
The US$20 billion megaproject—one of Indonesia’s most critical National Strategic Projects (PSN)—is expected to start commercial production between 2029 and 2030, positioning it as a cornerstone of the country’s future energy security.
“It is one of the biggest giants in Indonesia,” Minister Bahlil stated here on Thursday (June 25) as quoted by Antara News Agency.
The project, operated by INPEX Corporation and its partners, represents one of Indonesia’s largest natural gas developments. For years, the project faced persistent investment and regulatory hurdles that delayed its implementation.
To prevent further setbacks, Bahlil emphasized that the government is actively addressing investment bottlenecks and accelerating the project’s preparatory stages.
Key early milestones, including the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase, have shown encouraging progress.
“The Abadi Masela Block has been delayed for decades. It has yet to be completed. Now that the necessary decisions and studies have been finalized, I have instructed INPEX to begin work immediately,” Bahlil said.
Efforts to accelerate the project gained fresh momentum during President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Japan in March 2026, accompanied by Minister Bahlil.
During the visit, President Prabowo instructed officials to expedite two major energy priorities: accelerating investment in the green energy transition and advancing the development of the Abadi Masela Block.
Following those directives, Bahlil met with Takayuki Ueda, Chief Executive Officer of INPEX Corporation, to map out an accelerated project timeline.
During the meeting, Ueda reaffirmed INPEX’s commitment to expediting the development of the Abadi Masela Project. (RR)
